All About Asiatic Parrots

Classification

Asiatic parrots is an informal group referring to parrots originating in Asia. From this group, it is the Indian Ringneck that is the best known and most commonly kept as pets. 

Size and Appearance

Asiatic parrots range in size from as small as 6 inches (in the case of Plum-Headed parakeets) all the way up to  20 inches (in the case of the Derbyan parakeet. These species are easily sexed because the male gains a black ring around his neck as he reaches maturity. 

Natural Habitat and Conservation

RIng-necked parakeets naturally exist in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Burma, Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, Uganda, and Egypt.

Diet

Asiatic eat  fruit, vegetables, grain, seeds and nuts. 

Health

Ringneck Parrots are considered healthy birds. They do require a bit of attention and time outside of their cage to remain tame. 

Asiatic Parrots As Pets

Asiatic parrots are considered excellent pets because they learn quickly and like to do tricks. They require less attention than some  other parrots such as Cockatoos and like to talk. Indian Ringneck Parakeets are also called Rose Ringed Parakeets. These birds are a popular pet choice. Indian ringnecks make loyal companions yet are considered independent birds.  These birds do not crave attention and do not like to be cuddled all day. Expect your Indian Ringneck to live for 20 to 30 years.

Alexandrine Ringneck Parrots

Alexandrine parrots are medium sized birds but are the largest parakeets. They measure roughly 2 feet in length. Alexandrine parrots can live for up to 40 years. These birds love to chat with family and guests but it is possible for them to become a one person bird. Alexandrine parakeets are also considered gentle, meaning that they are less likely to bite. They are known for getting along with birds from other species.

African Ringnecks are very similar in appearance and personality to Indian Ringnecks, so much so that the two are often mistaken for each other. They are possible to tell apart because the African Ringneck is slighty smaller, the male has a thicker ring around it's neck and it's beak typically is a darker color than Indian Ringnecks.
